- Tools include fiberscope, borescopes, microscopes, weld gauges, calipers,
micrometers, steel scales, magnifying glasses and mirrors.
- VT is probably the oldest and most common method of NDT, having numerous
industrial and commercial applications. Examiners follow procedures ranging from
simple to very complex, some of which involve comparison of workmanship samples
with production parts. Visual techniques are used with all other NDT methods.

Visual inspection is the oldest and most commonly used of all inspection techniques. Qualified
inspectors make excellent use of this simple, inexpensive inspection method to:
- Locate leaks.
- Check for proper positioning of trays, bubble caps, etc.
- Note the presence of rust, scale or other foreign matter inspect welds.
|
|
For example, visual inspection of a completed weld by an experienced inspector can reveal
the following:
- Presence or absence of cracks.
- Orientation and position of any cracks.
- Surface porosity.
- Unfilled craters.
- Contour of weld beads.
- Orientation and position of fusion line.
- Extend of penetration.
- Undercutting.
- Sharp notches or misalignment.
- Presence or absence of oxide inclusions near the surface.

Micro measurement within ± 0.0002 accuracy in measuring the depth of scratches, cracks, blind
holes, corrosion, dents & pits, and height of spurs and other small protrusions in all materials.

Precise measurements, within ± 0.0002 accuracy, when
measuring thickness, depth of crazing, depth of fractures, and
depth & thickness of imbedded bubbles or seeds in
transparent materials for: Presence or absence of oxide
