NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING is
defined as: Any method of examining an object or material in a manner which
will not impair its future usefulness. NDT (as it is abbreviated) provides the means
to assure the detection or measurement of significant properties or performance
capabilities of materials, parts, assemblies, equipment or structures without
impairing their usability.
|
|
| |
|
There are NDT applications at
almost any stage in the production or life cycle of components.
- To assist in product development
- To screen or sort incoming materials
- To monitor, improve or control manufacturing processes
- To verify proper processing such as heat treating
- To verify proper assembly
- To inspect for in-service damage
- Detect internal or external flaws,
- Measure geometric characterstics,
- Determine material structure or composition,
- Measure some of the object's or material's properties
|

|
Some Uses of NDT
- Flaw Detection and Evaluation
- Leak Detection
- Location Determination
- Dimensional Measurements
- Extent of Fire Damage
- Estimation of Mechanical and Physical Properties
- Stress (Strain) and Dynamic Response Measurements
- Material Sorting and Chemical Composition Determination

Today there are many different
Nondestructive Testing methods employed. The following are the most widely
known and applied:
- Radiography
- Ultrasound
- Eddy Current
- Magnetic Particle
- Liquid Penetrant
- Visual Inspections
- Coating Thickness Testing
- Conductivity Testing
- Hardness Testing
- Leak Testing
